Easiest marketing tool I know? Well, easy is a relative term, but this last week I attended 2 Expos that are in line with my target market. It worked great. A stream of interested prospects came up and asked for information. PERFECT scenario right?

Actually - it is a perfect scenario! Here’s my basic tips on using an EXPO to generate business

 1. Pick an expo that is specific to your industry
2. Get a booth - don’t just go and hand out your information to the people who have booths - YIKES! That is so tacky and by the way, those that did that last week, I immediately threw their information in the garbage can so total wasted effort.
3. Make sure that your booth has information to give to prospects! Some booths had outdated brochures, non-existant information. Waste of money!
4. Create your follow up strategy before you attend the expo - you will not have time after the expo to create custom messages to everyone who came to your booth. So, if you create your follow up before the expo, you will appear efficient and be in better position to get the sale.
5. Make sure that you contact them more than once after the expo. After an expo, many folks are barbomarded with lots of promotional stuff and will be overwhelmed. If they did not buy in the initial contact, keep them on your newsletter list!

Of course, we can go on and on, but start with these basic techniques and you will generate lots of new business!

My favorite Trade Show Booth company - The Design Factory http://www.designfactorylv.com. You can rent the booth for a substantial discount from buying the booth, plus just pay for graphics. Great company with cost effective products.

If you are in direct sales and need additional help with a kick butt booth? Check out Susie Nelson’s Kick Butt Booths.

Good Luck!

Second question from Grace: Richelle, What is the rule of thumb to determine if the service I want to offer is meeting a need that will make money, i.e business vs. hobby?

Grace:
Well I think the only question to ask is if is the hobby making money? If it makes money then, it is a business. There is no other test. BUT- I think the question you are asking is do I have a viable business?

First, I would focus on the first part of the Million Dollar Equation – which is what problem is your business solving?

Every successful business provides a solution for its customers. FedEx provides a way to get packages overnight. Dominoes Pizza provides a way to get fresh hot pizza within 30 minutes or less. My company, FreshStart Telephone provided a way for credit challenged customers to get phone service guaranteed without a deposit. My private client – Henderson OB/GYN provides women with a doctor who listens to their challenges and guarantees to spend at least 30 minutes per appointment.

As you can see – the solution is almost as important as whether there is a niche. I like to figure out who has the problem, first and then create the solution! Once you determine who has the problem, then, the next step is to run them through the Ideal Niche Market test – (to read the blog post click here)
1.	Small enough to make the big competitors say “never mind”
2.	Big enough to make some money
3.	Is there available media
4.	Do they spend money?
5.	Are they spending money right now?

Good luck to you! I wish you nothing but success!
Let me know what you think!

Question From Grace Major:
Richelle : Based on your success, can you discuss how a startup business owner/entrepreneur determine how to establish a niche?

Grace - What is an ideal Niche Market?
An ideal Niche market is a market that has these qualities:
1. Small enough for you to dominate – How will you reach the prospect? If you choose for example African American women. Well there are millions of them. How can you reach them through media? And if you have no money, you will not reach enough to make you any money
2.	Big enough so that you can make money – Realize that you will only be able to penetrate and sell to about 20% of the market. If the market is only 1,000 – then that means you start with a capacity of 200 people that you can reach. YIKES – this is too small… An ideal niche market has at least 10,000 in it.
3.	Is there available media to reach the prospect? Is there a magazine, television show, newspaper, a list to direct mail, radio, websites who are also selling to the prospect?
4.	Does your niche have money to spend on your product or service?
5.	Is your niche spending right now?

Run your business through this test to determine if you have a niche market.
Good luck !

Winning is more than an attitude

Now, money is tight for the world, I get more and more questions about how did you keep going through adversity?

At first I used to seem baffled by this question. But lots of experience in failure, left me feeling like, this happens to everyone. So – lesson number one, as an entrepreneur, you will fail often. I have experienced way more failures in my life than successes but the one thing that never leaves my brain or heart is the reason for the failure.

As much as I probably should have looked at the failures as a reflection of me, I have never assumed that the failure was all me. I looked at what was going on in the world, and realized that there are always winners and losers. Even in this economy. During the most prosperous time in U.S. History, I was struggling to build my company. Yes, Struggling. So was it hard for me to focus on getting up again. Not really, how I view the economy – is actually directly tied to my bank account.

Right now, I am not experiencing the toughness of the economy. As a matter of fact, most of my personal mastermind group is not experiencing it either.

Who is experiencing it? Those that forgot to work on What Next in their businesses and have been coasting. Selling to “low hanging” fruit. Customers that come to them and never going deep into their list. Those making it focused on building relationships instead of building their second and third dream homes.
Winning is more than an attitude but it starts first with not worrying about the national economy, whether its good or bad. The focus is about your economy. It can change with YOU but only You.

IDEAS are only dreams until IMPLEMENTATION turns them into MONEY

This Beta Program was so much of a success that we are continuing it – for another 3 months to get ready for the NEW YEAR – 2010.

We already have 100% returning for the next phase of The Implementation Team and you are more than welcome to join them. But actually only 4 people are allowed to join this group.

What happens in the program?
1. I teach a specific lesson in order to help you bring in more business
2.	During the 4 hours, you work on the project – You are allowed to bring your laptop or notebook which ever you are used to working with. We have full internet access for research too.
3.	There are timed assignments that you must complete during the session to make sure that this 4 hours is spent getting things done, not researching, hoping and wishing.
4.	It is a commitment to getting your work done. PERIOD
We know that you can’t just work in the business you must work on the business. I actually do this myself in order to get work done for both my 3 businesses and for my private clients too.
Let me also say that is program is not for everyone. If you are a self starter and are already generating lots of money in your business then, this might not work.

BUT, if you are struggling with getting things done. Not sure about the GKIC way of doing things and are just frustrated by not being able to set time aside, this is an appointment I make you keep. There is no dropping in and out of the classes. You must commit to attend all 3 and turn in your homework assignments. This is school for REAL, but this school at least has a guaranteed Return on Investment.

You must take action today and sign up!
The first meeting is WED, Oct 21, 2009 at 10a – 2pm

The 1 question I ask new coaching clients that shocks me is “What motivates you to take action?”

If they say when I am broke, that is my only motivation, I prepare myself for a long journey. Mostly because, if it is money that motivates you, what do you do when you have enough? Or when there are no pending challenges?

After building several million dollar businesses, money is no longer a motivator, but being the BEST is.

That is the reason why I still invest in learning how to market effectively, even though I am a marketing expert, I still invest in personal development so that I can become a better “giver” of myself and I invest financially to make sure that Devyn can have the same opportunities that I was allowed.

But here is my 100 Day Challenge, I created my own self imposed 100 Day Challenge about 2 years ago. And each time I conduct it, I get better and better at it. I like to change things in my life that need to be changed, create better relationships and also GIVE MORE to charity than I ever have.

My 100 Day Challenge starts tomorrow September 1st. My goal, create $100,000 extra dollars in 100 days with 10% going to my favorite charity KIVA. My goals are broken into financial goals, fitness goals, relationship goals and helping others goals.

I encourage you to do the same!

Let me know your goals, and I will keep you posted on mine

Much Success!!!

September is back to school time and I noticed that most entrepreneurs struggling in this economy are running their businesses like college frat houses.

Brace yourself this may be a little controversial but sometimes instead of giving you “professional book smart” tactics, I have to be blunt and give you down and dirty street smarts.

Here are 3 strategies that will occur during Rush Week at UNLV in the coming months and hopefully you can learn from these horrible examples how to run your business right.

1. Frat BOYS - Only selling to the easy ones?
In a Boys will be Boys mentality, many college boys are not really confident in who they are and tend to target the “Easy Girls”. Hopefully, you are not making the same mistake. Selling only to easy customers would be to target customers by selling PRICE only. When you are the lowest and cheapest, you may be signing lots of new clients, however, they are not keepers. They are not customers for life. These customers will leave as soon as there is another offer for similar services that are cheaper than yours. This may immediately help with cash flow, however as a long term strategy this will not work. The analogy – the “easy” girl is not the girl you take home. If you only sell PRICE, your business will not survive. There is only one Wal-Mart.

2.	FRAT BOYS DO Not pay attention to what is important
As typical Frat House Antics, living in the moment can be dangerous. Just like for an entrepreneur. Attention should be focused on figuring out a way to bring back customers again and again to buy your products or services. It should not be on making the sale today. As well as what are the long term goals and what I call “FUTURE MONEY”. It is difficult to drive your car if you are always focused on the rear view mirror. You must be planning for what will happen next month. That does not come from living in the moment and just handling business today. Creating your Marketing PLAN and implementing it solves this problem.

3.	FRAT BOYS - Hit it & Quit It mentality…
I warned you this was going to be a bit controversial. But the real gold in any business is not to keep getting new clients and have them buy once. The KEY to building a million dollar business is to build a relationship with your existing customer so that they trust you. Getting your customer to come to you first is the real KEY. Even though, I never sold telephone systems, my customers were trained that anything that had to do with telecom to ask my opinion. They trusted my information and as soon as you become a trusted advisor, chasing customers and chasing money is no longer in your daily activities.

It’s ok to grab an occasional beer, but always strive for building a long term relationship
